RIVERDOG END OF SEASON PARTY!!!

Can you believe all 13 Riverdog players and their families gathered together to celebrate an outstanding season on Memorial Day?! Some changed their plans, so they could attend. Some came back from the beach early, so they could attend. Some didn't have any plans at all, so they could attend. ;-)

What a great time and we owe a huge THANKS to Coach Lance, Stephanie, Coach Wayne and Brenda!!!!! It was just a beautiful location to all come together and celebrate!! Also, a huge THANK you to their niece, Zoe, for putting together an unbelieveable slideshow! Wow!!!!! So impressive and very talented. Now each Riverdog can look back on that cd from time to time and I'm sure you'll see some smiling from the kids!

We all had such a great season. The Riverdogs were supposed to be in its "rebuilding" season because of the high number of draft picks Coach Lance needed (many moved on up). That is hard to believe because we finished just a 1/2 game from first place in the league. But, more importantly, all 12 Riverdogs and their families became one team and had FUN!!! They learned so much from the coaches and from each other!

The following Riverdogs will move up to the next age group (and to the upper field):

#12 Brandon Gregory
#1 Andrew Locke
#5 Christian Mosley
#55 Tony Molden
#98 Blake McCain

One Riverdog will be moving to Texas and will be missed for sure...

#13 Aidan Smith

Returning back to the Riverdogs next year:

#7 Lawson Wheeler
#4 Ian Turner
#8 Griffin Dittner
#27 Benjamin Stahlman
#24 Joshua Bussey
#44 Luke Hayes
#3 John Penry

The Spring 2011 Riverdogs will meet again Tuesday night at Closing Ceremonies, which will be around 7pm!

Minor League Tournament Schedule: Spring 2011

The best way to keep track of the tournament is to visit West Raleigh's website at http://www.wrbaseball.org/ because of the weather! As of now the Riverdogs are scheduled to play this Thursday at 5:30pm against the Bulls. If we win the game, then we play Saturday at 5pm. If we do not win the game, then we play Saturday at 11am.

Closing ceremonies is now scheduled for May 31 at 7pm!

The Last Game of the Regular Season...RIVERDOGS 7 Lookouts 5

What a weekend!! Rain, rain and more rain! Our game against the Lookouts on Saturday was canceled due to the weather. Coach Lance was able to straighten everything out with the West Raleigh officials and they changed their decision...we were going to make up the game on Sunday at 1pm. That meant the Minor League tournament schedule would be changed!

Whether we played the last game of the season or not...the Riverdogs claimed the #2 spot in the league...just a 1/2 game out of first. Not bad at all!

Here's what our DEFENSE showed...

1st inning:
2 unassisted plays by Tony at first base for the first 2 outs! Lawson did a great job backing him up.

2nd inning:
Playing out in the left field area...a ball was hit to Tony and he was able to stop the ball, which allowed the runner to stay at first base. Then, another ball was hit to Andrew in center. With a power throw...the runner ended up with a single. Great job outfielders for backing each other up and keeping the ball in front of you!

Ian had an unassisted out at first base for out #1.
Lawson caught a fly ball at second for the second out.
Lawson (2nd base) through the ball to first (Ian) to end the inning.

3rd inning:
Luke (3rd base) threw the ball to Ian (1st) for out #1.
Andrew, playing pitcher, threw the ball to Ian at first for another out to end the inning.

4th inning:
Joshua caught a fly ball out in right field for out #1!
Christian played great back up to throw the ball back into the infield and Andrew kept the runner at first as he threw a ball into the infield quickly.
Tony (playing first) threw the ball to Blake (shortstop) for out #2.
Lawson (second base) to Tony (first base) to end the inning!

5th inning:
Christian and Tony played great defense in the outfield as they played great back up to get the ball back into the infield quickly.
Aidan caught an infield fly at the pitcher's mound for an out.

6th inning:
Another great defensive play by Christian to hold the runner at first.
An infield fly ball to Tony at first for out #1.
A pop fly to Aidan at the pitcher's mound for out #2.
A fielder's choice hit to Lawson...he throws the ball to Blake at second base to end the inning!

Now our OFFENSE...

Josh: 2-3 (hits to left field and right center) and a run scored
Lawson: hard hits, but will get them next time
Luke: 3-3 with 2 doubles, 1 RBI and 3 runs scored (hits to left, center and left center)
Blake: 2-3 with a homerun over the fence at centerfield and 2 RBI
Tony: 2-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored (hits to short and left field)
Ian: 1-3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored (a hit to right center)
Andrew: 1-2 with 1 RBI (hit right down the middle)
Aidan: 1-2 with 1 RBI (nice hit to center)
Brandon: 1-2 (a hit to second)
Christian: hard hits, but will get them next time
Benjamin: 1-2 with a hit to shortstop
John: 1-2 with a hit to third

Game #13: RIVERDOGS 14 Bees 8

What a game!! The fifth inning was an exciting one! Wow! Every team has a lot of talent and the spring draft was obviously an impressive one because the teams all have similar records! It's coming down to the very end of the regular season to find out the overall places! The Bees and the Riverdogs played well tonight.

Let's go through our defense...

1st inning:
Ian caught a fly ball out in center field for the first out.
Lawson had an unassisted out at second base for out #2.
The third out was impressive. The ball was hit out to right center...right near Brandon. He threw the ball to Blake (at short) and then he turned and gunned the ball to Luke at third for the third out! Impressive play right there and a great way for the Riverdogs to end that inning!

2nd inning:
A pop fly to Lawson at second for out #1. A fielder's choice to Lawson, so he chose to throw the runner out at second with Blake's help. The third out included a fly ball to Blake at shortstop.

3rd inning:
An infield fly ball to Tony at first for out #1. Then, two fielder's choice opportunities for Lawson. Both times he threw the runner out at second with Blake's assistance!

4th inning:
An infield fly to Luke at third four the first out. Blake and Tony combined their efforts to get the runner out at first for out #2. The third out was between Lawson (2nd base) and Tony (at first).

5th inning:
Lots of action here...The first batter hit the ball out to Andrew in center field, but he was able to quickly throw the ball in and hold the runner to a single. A ball was hit to John in right field area and he quickly threw the ball in to keep the runner at second. Josh, playing catcher in this inning, quickly stood up and caught a pop fly foor the first out. Out in left field, Tony quickly stopped the ball and threw it into the field to hold the runner at second base. Then, a ball was hit to Blake (at short) and had a great throw to Ian, playing first base, for an out. Luke had an unassisted out at third to end the inning. Phew!

6th inning:
Christian was playing right center and twice threw the ball into the infield. At one point, he was so close to throwing a runner out at first and the second time he came so close to throwing the runner out at second. Aidan caught a pop fly at the pitcher's mound for out #1. Luke threw the ball over to Tony, at first, for out #2. Then, a ball was hit to Aidan (pitcher) and he threw the ball over to Tony at first for out #3 to end the game!

The outfielders (and infielders) did a great job backing each other up! Great work outfielders: John, Ian, Andrew, Brandon, Christian, Benjamin, Tony, Joshua and Griffin! Our two catchers have to be on it all the time even with all that gear on! Way to go Benjamin and Joshua!

Next, our OFFENSE!!!!

Joshua went 1-3 (single down the middle)

Lawson went 2-3 with a double to left field (single to right center)

Luke went 3-3 with a double to left center (hits to the pitcher and second base as well)

Blake went 3-3 with a HOMERUN and 5 RBI (another homerun to right field and then 2 singles down the middle)

Tony went 2-3 with 1 RBI (hits to 3rd base and a fielder's choice to short)

Ian went 2-3 with a triple (down the first base line near the fence) and 3 RBI (another hit out to center field)

Andrew went 3-3 with 2 RBI (a hit to left center and 2 to short)

Aidan went 1-3 with a triple (left field) and 2 RBI

Brandon went 1-2 with a double down the first base line

John went 2-2 with 1 RBI (singles to his favorite spot...left center area)

Christian, Benjamin and Griffin hit the ball hard this game and well get on base next time!

Score By Inning:
Bees:          2    0    0    1    5    0
Riverdogs:  5    0    4    1    4    X

This win has us still in 2nd place within the minor league. We have one game left. This Saturday at 9am against the Lookouts!

GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!

West Raleigh Night at the Durham Bulls Game!

On Sunday, May 8 (yes, that would be Mother's Day!!!), it was West Raleigh night at the Durham Bulls game. There were quite a few teams there and the Riverdogs had some representatives who attended the game...Luke and Ian along with a future Riverdog, Gavin. We had a lot of fun and they even had the chance to run the bases after the game! Out of all the kids who ran the bases...there were two kids who made sure they touched each base...yes, that would be Luke and Ian!

Game #12...RIVERDOGS 14 Bats 4

The Riverdogs had to wait many hours to play their game today since it was the last minor league game of the day with the first pitch thrown at 5pm! But, the DAWGS were definitely ready and played a great game!!! The teams in the league are so close in the standings. Even though the tournament bracket was posted...no team can really look at when the first game might be since we're entering the last week of regular season play!

This game was exciting! Very exciting!

Let's go through the batting order first...

Joshua went 4-4 with 1 double, 2 RBI and a run scored!

Lawson went 2-4 with 1 double, 1 RBI and scored twice!

Luke went 2-4 with 1 double, 1 RBI and scored once!

Blake went 3-3 with a double, a solo homerun way out in the trees beyond the left field fence, 4 RBI and scored once!

Tony went 2-3 and scored once (Welcome back T-Man!!! Glad to see that you are feeling better and you definitely were missed by the DAWGS!)

Ian went 3-3 with a triple, 1 RBI and scored once!

Andrew went 2-3 with 1 RBI and scored once!

Aidan went 2-3!

Brandon went 3-3 with a double, 1 RBI and scored once!

Christian went 2-3 and scored once! Welcome back #5!!! We're glad you are feeling better!

Benjamin went 2-3 and scored once!

John went 3-3 with 1 RBI and scored twice!

Griffin went 2-3 with 2 RBI and scored once!

If you count that up and know there are 13 players on the team, then you'll know that EVERYONE went at least 2 for something! What an offensive lineup!!!

We scored 5 runs in the first, 3 in the second, 1 in the fifth and 5 in the sixth!

The Riverdogs played great defense tonight!

First inning:
A line drive hit right to Blake at shortstop for the first out.
A ball hit to Blake, but then Blake threw it to Lawson at second for the second out.
Ian caught a fly ball in center for the third out.

Second inning:
1-2-3...
Luke (3rd base) threw the ball to Ian (playing 1st base) for out #1.
A fly ball to Ian at first for out #2.
A ball hit to Lawson at second and then he threw the ball to Ian at first for out #3.

Third inning:
Unassisted play at second base for Blake. Out #1.

The ball was hit to the pitcher (Andrew) and Andrew threw the ball to Ian at first for out #3.

Fourth inning:
Another 1-2-3...

Blake to Tony again for the second out.
Luke (3rd base) to Tony (1st base) for the third out.

Fifth inning:
Fly ball to Blake at short for the first out.
Blake throws the ball to Luke at third four the second out.
Blake throws the ball to Lason at second for the third out.

Sixth inning:
Fly ball to Christian at the pitcher's mound for out #1.
Double play...fly ball caught by Luke at third and then tagged the base to get the runner out to end the game!

Josh and Benjamin did a great job behind the plate for us and keeping the ball in front of them!
Andrew played well in left field and kept a runner to a single!

Brandon, John, Griffin, Josh, Tony, Andrew, Christian, Aidan and Ian played great in the outfield backing each other up and backing up the infield!

Hopefully the spectators have picked up on how well the coaches support the other teams. For example, when a player hits a homerun. The opposing team coach has always congratulated that player when he makes it to homeplate. You might find a coach tying a shoelace on the other team or congratulating the other team's players on great plays or even helping out a catcher! Hats off to the West Raleigh coaches! Not only are they supporting their own players, but also the other players in the league. That's just awesome!

Next game for the Riverdogs...Tuesday night at 5:30pm against the Bees!

Here's the standings as of tonight...

Game #10: RIVERDOGS 3 Scrappers 7

Today's game at 1pm was a make up game from a few weeks ago. The Riverdogs showed some great hitting, but the balls ended up in the players' gloves! I forgot to take a picture of the books, so I can't give you the run down of how our players did.

Okay, I have the info now (5/3/11)...

Offense:
Josh 1-3
Lawson 2-3
Luke 1-3
Blake 2-3 with 2 RBI
Ian 1-3 with 1 RBI
Andrew 1-2
Aidan 0-2
Brandon 0-2
Christian 1-2
Benjamin 0-2
John 2-2
Griffin 2-2

Defense:
1st inning: infield fly to Luke at first for OUT #1. A ball was hit to John in the outfield...he threw it in to Blake at shortstop and then turned around and threw the ball to Brandon at third for the 2nd out! The third out of the inning involved a ball hit to Blake who then threw the runner out at third with a great catch by Brandon!

2nd inning: Lawson at second to Luke at first for OUT #1 followed by 2 unassisted outs at first base by Luke!

3rd inning: First baseman, Luke, had an unassisted play and then a pop fly to Lawson at second base for another out.

4th inning: A fly out to Ian at centerfield for the first out...an unassisted play by Lawson at second for the 2nd out...then a beautiful play by the catcher, Joshua...he threw the runner out at first (Luke was in position to catch the ball)! Great teamwork!

5th inning: Lawson to Luke for out #1 and another out involved a great throw from Blake (shortstop) to Luke (first).

6th inning: Let's just say Aidan! The ball was hit to the pitcher (Aidan) who threw the ball to Luke at first for OUT #1. Then, an infield fly ball to Aidan for OUT #2 and he wasn't finished...threw the runner out in a double play with Luke's help!

The DAWGS will be ready for Tuesday's game against the Scrappers! They'll take a day off between games.
